hCG
Also known as: Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, Chorionic Gonadotropin, Pregnyl, Novarel, Ovidrel
Human chorionic gonadotropin is a placental glycoprotein hormone composed of a 92-amino-acid alpha subunit (shared with LH, FSH, and TSH) and a distinct 145-amino-acid beta subunit, joined non-covalently and heavily glycosylated. It acts as an agonist at the luteinizing hormone/choriogonadotropin receptor (LHCGR), mimicking the LH surge. In females it sustains the corpus luteum and progesterone production in early pregnancy and triggers final oocyte maturation and ovulation; in males it stimulates testicular Leydig cells to produce intratesticular testosterone, supporting spermatogenesis. hCG is FDA-approved (e.g., Pregnyl, Novarel, recombinant Ovidrel) for ovulation induction, assisted reproduction, and male hypogonadism/cryptorchidism.

Typical dose range
Fertility (final oocyte maturation): single 5,000-10,000 IU intramuscular or subcutaneous. Male TRT adjunct: commonly 250-500 IU subcutaneous 2-3x weekly (protocols vary, up to ~1,500 IU)
Half-life
~24-36 hours terminal half-life after IM/SC injection (biphasic; longer than LH due to glycosylation)
Common research uses
Safety notes
FDA-approved prescription drug; prescription-only in the US. Risks include ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) in women, thromboembolism, gynecomastia and fluid retention in men, and injection-site reactions. hCG is prohibited in men at all times under the WADA Code (S2 peptide hormones); homeopathic/weight-loss hCG products are not FDA-approved and are considered illegal/fraudulent.
Reconstitution
Lyophilized urinary hCG is reconstituted with the supplied bacteriostatic diluent; refrigerate after reconstitution and use within the labeled window. Recombinant hCG (Ovidrel) is supplied prefilled.

The β-hCG-TNF-α-T cell axis in threatened abortion: unraveling the pathogenic cascade from aberrant glycosylation to inflammatory demise
Threatened abortion (TA), vaginal bleeding before 20 weeks in a viable pregnancy, affects 20-25% of early pregnancies. Its unpredictable nature is a major clinical challenge. Current diagnostics (β-hCG and ultrasound) are retrospective and fail to reveal the dynamic pathology.

Re-assessment of the therapeutic LH window in normogonadotropic IVF patients
Introduction Previous research has proposed a luteinizing hormone (LH) threshold and ceiling level, below which oestradiol production is not adequate and above which LH may be detrimental to follicular development.

Diagnostic performance of artificial intelligence models trained on scattered single-cell images is not preserved for hyperchromatic crowded cell groups in cervical cytology
Background Deep learning has shown promising performance in cervical cytology; however, many studies have relied on presegmented single-cell images rather than the more complex morphologic patterns encountered in routine practice.

hCG promotes secondary ovulation and supplementary corpus luteum formation during early pregnancy in mares
This study evaluated whether the administration of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) during early pregnancy accelerates ovulatory dynamics and alters serum progesterone concentrations in mares with dominant follicles.

Persistent Low-Level hCG After Gestational Trophoblastic Neoplasia Remission: Treatment-Free Probability Stratified by Early hCG Course
Background/Objectives : To determine treatment-free probability after persistent low-level human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) elevation following complete remission from gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) and examine its association with the early hCG course.
